OVERVIEW

Prof. Dr. S.M. Balaji, BDS, MDS, MFDS RCPS (Glasg), FDS RCPS (Glasg), Ph.D., DSc, is a well-known Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeon from Chennai, India. Currently, He is the Director-Consultant of Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital, a globally renowned center for craniomaxillofacial deformity correction surgery. Formerly he was a Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of Govt. Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and currently Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Dentistry, The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai

He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Maxillofacial Surgery (AMS), the official journal of the Indian Academy of Maxillofacial Surgery. Being an avid researcher, practicing surgeon and academician, Prof. Balaji has published more than 160 manuscripts in peer-reviewed scientific journals. These works have garnered 1276 citations to date with 63.8 average cites/ year and 8.13 mean cites/paper. He currently has an H-index of 17 and G-index of 30. He has also served on the panel of the Cochrane Oral Health Group – Oral surgery specialty – title prioritization Working Group, 2014 as well as the Craniofacial Osteobiology and Distraction Working Group.

He is the current Hon. Secretary of the International Association of Dental Research – Indian Section (Hon. Secretary), Executive Vice President of the International College of Continuing Dental Education (Executive Vice-President), Secretary of the Non-Communicable Disease Alliance – southeast Asia Region (Secretary), Education committee member of the Federation Dentaire Internationale – World Dental Federation. In the past, he has served as the President of the International College of Dentists (ICD) India- Section VI, International Association of Dental Research – Asia Pacific Region, International Association of Dental Research – Student Training And Research Network and member of the Communication and Support committee member of the Federation Dentaire Internationale – World Dental Federation.

Prof. S.M. Balaji is the author of “The Textbook on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.” Published by Elsevier, it is currently the country’s bestseller and the prescribed book used by undergraduate and post-graduate students alike.  His book on ‘Clinical Cranio Maxillofacial Surgery‘ is a compendium of surgical cases from his thirty-plus years of specialty practice, which has seen him perform many innovations to standard surgical procedures, thus improving them manifold times. Of great significance is the fact that this book is authored by a single individual, which is a rarity in the world of medical textbooks.

He was awarded the highest scientific “Prof. David Precious Award” for his research into protein-guided tissue regeneration procedures for repair of orofacial clefts at the 12th World Cleft and Craniofacial Congress held in Leipzig, Germany. This award comes with a cash prize of US $1000. He received the award from the world-renowned craniomaxillofacial surgeon, Prof. Kenneth Salyer, President, International Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation. He has been awarded the Brammaiah Sastri Award for groundbreaking research findings in the field of reconstructive surgery using bone morphogenetic proteins by the Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists. He regularly represents India in various International forums including the ADA, FDI and IADR.

An avid researcher, he has embarked on a mission to edit journals of his specialty – Oral Surgery. He has regularly lectured on the various aspects of publishing scientific manuscripts as well as the editorial process. His lectures include
